Everything You Need To Know Before Watching Star Wars: The Acolyte
Star Wars' next TV show, The Acolyte, will come to Disney+ on June 4. Here’s everything you need to know ahead of this epic Star Wars series.
Luke Skywalker
The Acolytewill haveStar Wars’very first on-screen twins since Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia. Although the teasers and trailers forThe Acolyteat first seemed to reveal only one character, Mae, recently, the cast and crew behind the show have confirmed the twist thatThe Acolytefeatures twins, Osha and Mae. This is immediately reminiscent of Luke and Leia,Star Wars’first set of twins and arguably the franchise’s most iconic characters.
The Acolytewill haveStar Wars’very first on-screen twins since Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia.

However,The Acolytehas one key advantage over theReturn of the Jediplot twist that Luke and Leia were really siblings all along;this time, the twin plot twist was planned well in advance. While the retcon that Luke and Leia were twins led to the most beloved sibling pair inStar Warsand made theStar Warsprequel trilogy even better, it can’t be denied that the last-minute twist created some complex issues for the franchise.
Leia Organa
Namely, Luke and Leia had been very obviously billed as love interests inA New HopeandThe Empire Strikes Back, forming a love triangle with Han Solo. Infamously, the twins also kissed one another directly on the mouth inThe Empire Strikes Back, inarguably demonstrating the romantic nature of their relationship. Even without this uncomfortable dynamic with Luke and Leia after they discovered they were siblings, though, this retcon wasn’t as well done as it could have been.
Had Luke and Leia secretly being twins been the plan from the beginning, that story could have been developed much more. Instead, most of the story about the two being siblings has come from the movies and TV shows that followed the original trilogy. Sadly, this meant that Luke and Leia had little screen time together after learning they were siblings. Moreover, the implications of two twins being connected in the Force were under-explored.
Mae
Although few details have been revealed aboutStar Wars’newest twins,The Acolytecast and crew have confirmed that the twins are both Force-sensitive and were separated at a young age. As Mae has already been shown in trailers forThe Acolyteto be drawn to the dark side of the Force, it seems as though the two may be pulled in different directions, on opposite sides of the Force. This could set up an incredible dynamic, wherein the twins must fight one another. Alternatively, this could become a fascinating representation of balance in the Force.
Yes, Luke and Leia being siblings was a surprising twist, and the two have since become better known for being siblings than for being (initially) love interests, yet even their dynamic can’t compare to twins fighting on opposite sides of the Force. In fact, not eventhe Force Dyad, introduced inStar Wars: The Rise of Skywalkeras the bond connecting Rey and Kylo Ren, is as interesting as this concept. While Kylo Ren and Rey were bonded and had amazing powers through the Dyad, light and dark side characters being mirror images of each other feels brand-new and thrilling.

Star Wars Waited The Perfect Amount Of Time To Use Twins Again
Star Warscertainly ran the risk of over-using twins as a plot twist, butThe Acolyteis the perfect time to connect to this massive George Lucas retcon.Return of the Jediwas released more than 40 years ago, andStar Warshas avoided repeating this particular storyline. Now, enough time has passed where it does not feel overdone but rather will be an exciting and notable connection to one ofStar Wars’most significant relationships.
Currently, details ofThe Acolyteremain minimal, asStar Warsprepares for the show’s June 4th release. However, what has been revealed, Mae and Osha included, suggests thatStar Wars’next TV show is going to be a thrilling addition to the franchise. Indeed,Star Wars: The Acolyte’sconnection to this one major George Lucas retcon indicates that there are incredible things to come.
