OpenAI CEO says ChatGPT can’t keep up with “biblical” demand of Studio Ghibli trend
OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, has urged fans to ease up on generating Studio Ghibli-style images, as the viral trend has left his team stretched thin.
It all started in late March when OpenAI introduced a new image generator on its platform, which quickly took the internet by storm.
TheStudio Ghibli-inspired images, which resemble the style of the iconic animation studio, sparked a viral trend across social media platforms like X, TikTok, and Instagram. While many have celebrated the fad, the sheer volume of requests has overwhelmed OpenAI’s servers and team.
At first,Sam Altam embraced the trend’s success with humor, even updating his profile picture on X to a Ghibli-style rendition of himself. However, the excitement soon turned into a logistical headache for the company.

On March 30, Altman took to X again, this time with a plea: “Can y’all please chill on generating images this is insane our team needs sleep.”

Responding to a comment from Paul Graham asking if the high load required constant vigilance, Altman admitted: “We just haven’t been able to catch up since launch so people are still working to keep the service up. Biblical demand, I have never seen anything like it.”

This comes after Altman revealed that the unexpected popularity of the trend was pushingOpenAI’s GPUs to their limits. He announced plans to temporarily impose usage limits while the team worked on optimizing efficiency.
“It’s super fun seeing people love images in ChatGPT,” he wrote on X. “But our GPUs are melting. We are going to temporarily introduce some rate limits while we work on making it more efficient. Hopefully won’t be long.”
