Summary
I’ve had high hopes for a sequel toDungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thievesfor a while now, but they just got crushed thanks to some recent news regarding the franchise. After years of hoping for a good live-actionDungeons & Dragonsmovie,Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thievesfulfilled my wishes by turning the beloved tabletop RPG series into a fun ensemble adventure movie. Due to how much I loved the first film, I’ve been hoping forDungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves 2ever since the original’s release - but it doesn’t look like that will be happening.
Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thievesis the firstDungeons & Dragonsmoviethat has successfully taken the lore-filled world ofDungeons & Dragonsand turned it into a movie that actually works.Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thievesfollows a group of outcasts who embark on a dangerous heist mission to stop the plan of an evil Red Wizard, with the gang coming across all kinds of iconicDungeons & Dragonsmonsters along the way.Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thievesshould have been the start to a massive movie franchise, but my hopes for a sequel are gone.

It Makes The Sequel Less Likely
In January 2023, Paramount+ ordered a live-actionDungeons & DragonsTV series, which I thought was incredibly exciting news. The prospect of a full series based onDungeons & Dragonsmeant that the more obscure corners of the franchise could have been explored properly in live-action, as a full TV series would offer more time in the world than a single feature film. Furthermore, ordering this show ahead of the release ofDungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thievesshowed immense confidence in the film, as the studio seemed to be preparing for the film to be a major success.
However,Paramount+ has stopped development on the live-actionDungeons & DragonsTV show, meaning that the exciting series will no longer be happening. This is sad enough in its own right, as it means that theDungeons & Dragonsseries that I was so excited for will be lost to time, with the opportunity to explore all kinds ofDungeons & Dragonsstories now being gone. However, news of the show’s cancelation also casts doubts on the possibility ofDungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves 2, which may be the most heartbreaking part about the announcement.

If Paramount+ isn’t confident enough in the franchise to continue with an already-announcedDungeons & Dragonsspinoff TV show, then it is even less likely that Paramount+would invest in a sequel to a movie that has already proven to be unsuccessful. It would be strange to cancel oneDungeons & Dragonsproject just to announce another, with it seeming more likely that Paramount is planning on abandoning this take on theDungeons & Dragonsfranchise entirely.
New Dungeons & Dragons Setback Is So Disappointing After 91% Rotten Tomatoes Breakthrough
The Dungeons & Dragons show has hit a major setback, and that news is even more disheartening when considering one great installment of the franchise.
Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves 2 Was Already A Big Ask
The Movie Was Already Unlikely
Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves 2was already a big ask based on the performance of the first film, and the chances of a sequel now have become even more slim. The box office ofDungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieveswas pretty disappointing, with the film only making $208.2 million against a budget of $150 million. While this isn’t the worst box office in the world, the general rule in Hollywood is that budgets have to be doubled in order for a film to be profitable, andDungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieveswas a long way off.
While the film seemed to do well on VOD and on Paramount+, exact numbers aren’t available for this, meaning that it isn’t certain how successful the film was after it left theaters. So, for a film that did poorly in theaters and may have done ok on streaming, a sequel isn’t guaranteed. Thus, it already seemed unlikely thatDungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves 2would happen, and I think that the chances are even more slim now that Paramount has shown disinterest in otherDungeons & Dragonslive-action projects.

Could Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves 2 Still Happen?
What Has Been Said So Far
Despite all signs pointing to no,I as well as many other fans of the first film still hopeDungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves 2will happen, so here is everything that we know about a potential sequel.Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thievesstar Sophia Lillishas said that she doesn’t know anything about a sequel, and while this is oftentimes said by stars who are hoping to hide the possibility of a sequel, her comments seem to indicate that she genuinely hasn’t heard anything. Here is what she said:
“I hope so. It was fun to work on, and maybe they’ll make another one, but I think they made a good one by itself. But you know as much as I do, to be honest. I wish I knew more.”
Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves 2still hasn’t been confirmed yet, but it could still happen on one condition. Paramount CEO Brian Robbins talked aboutDungeons & Dragons 2, explaining that the studio would have to find a way to make the sequel for less money if it did happen. So, even ifDungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves 2does happen someday, it will probably still be a smaller-scale version of the film that I already love.
Honor Among Thieves 2 Should Still Happen (Despite Dungeons & Dragons' New TV Show)
The new Dungeons & Dragons TV show could mean a sequel to Honor Among Thieves is off the table, but a second movie would still work well.
Why Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves 2 Should Happen
It Would Still Be Worth It Despite The Original’s Failure
Despite the commercial failure of the first film,Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves 2should still happen. The first film managed to strike the perfect balance of appealing toDungeons & Dragonsfans like me while also not gatekeeping newcomersto the franchise. ADungeons & Dragonssequel film could continue to draw in fans while maintaining the audience who is already invested, allowing the sequel to be more popular than the original.
On top of that,Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieveswas actually reviewed really well, something that can oftentimes be rare for major blockbusters. Despite it being a big-budget action and comedy film that has wide appeal, the movie was praised for its creativity and heart, something that is missing from many blockbusters. A sequel toDungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thievescould pull off this trick again, making me and other fans happy once more.
