Summary
While the third movie remains in an unclear state of limbo, original star Alanna Ubach has an exciting response to her potentialLegally Blonde 3return. Ubach rose to prominence playing the character of Serena McGuire, best friend and sorority sister toReese Witherspoon’s leading lady Elle Woodsin MGM’s 2001 hit rom-com, which was a box office success, taking over $140 million worldwide, against a budget of $18 million. Ubach also reprised her role in the marginally less successful sequelLegally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde, and went on to appear in such successful shows asCalifornicationandEuphoria.
During a recent interview withScreen RantforTed’s awards consideration,Ubach opened up on the possibility of her returning to the role of SerenainLegally Blonde 3, revealing that there have been “sort of” talks for her to return, but stopped short of giving definitive confirmation. She also discussed her views on the upcoming prequel seriesElle, set for a 2025 release, as well asLegally Blonde: The Musical, and discussed her excitement at being involved in ther franchise. Check out Ubach’s full comments on the matter below:

Alanna Ubach:Yes, a prequel. I can’t wait to watch that. Elle the prequel, this is her as a little chicken right before she becomes a USC student, think well, right before she goes to college, and I’m really looking forward to seeing that. I saw the musical for the first time and I loved it. [There’s] sort of [been talks for me to return]. I don’t know if I can really say anything about it, really. I don’t know. I mean, honestly, your guess is as good as mine.
The funny thing about being a character actor is you’re usually called a week before they start production. “Hey, you’re playing Serena.” “I am?” “Yeah, you start Monday, you’re going to Wardrobe tomorrow, blah, blah, blah. And there you go. All right, let’s go.” You have to be game for anything.

What Role Could Serena Play In Legally Blonde 3 (& When Might It Release)?
As one of Elle’s best friends, and sorority sisters, there is little doubt that Serena will have a prominent supportingrole inLegally Blonde 3, but what exactly her character arc might look like is unclear at this point, and will depend largely on the script and story direction. As the characters ofSerena and Elle will be in their 40s-50s now, it is possible she could be a career woman, and might even have a family. How much she and Elle will have kept in contact remains to be seen, and the movie could also touch on her relationship with their other best friend, Jessica Cauffiel’s Margot.
There is no set release date for the threequel yet, but the project remains in pre-production, and many of the original cast seem to be attached. It seems unlikely that the movie will be released in 2025, asthe prequelLegally BlondeTV showis due to hit screens then, but the film could get a theatrical release anytime from 2026 onward. The movie has been in development hell for some time, and was believed to be one of the franchises concluding in 2023, before MGM confirmed that Mindy Kaling and Dan Goor would pen an entirely new script for the film.
