In a new feature withThe Hollywood Reporter, Hamm spoke about how he almost landed a major superhero role for Warner Bros. back in the day, as he was offered to play Green Lantern. However, Hamm revealed that he passed on that gig, as he shared the following:
That was one I definitely didn’t want to do. But I’ve pitched myself for a couple parts of the Marvel universe, I don’t want to say what exactly, but it was a part of a comic book that I really liked. I was like, “Are you going to do this story?” And they were like, “Yeah, we’re actually thinking of that.” I go, “Good. I should be the guy.” So maybe it’ll work out. But I look at a guy like Jeff Goldblum’s career — and I know Jeff a bit, we used to have the same therapist — and I’m just like, “God, how awesome to be able to do all the things he’s done.” He had his leading man phase, and he does Marvel and he’ll just roll through and steal the scene, and then he’s doing commercials and he’s funny as shit. I see him out and he’s happy. So, consciously or not, I’m modeling my life to be that: varied and happy and fulfilled.

Jon Hamm Says He’s Still Pitching Himself For MCU Roles
Hamm previously spoke toGQ, to reveal he was offered the role of Hal Jordan in 2011’sGreen Lantern,and why he turned it down. He seems to have changed his tune on his affection for comic book properties since that interview:
”I mean, they came after me pretty hard for Green Lantern. But I was like, meh, that’s not what I want to do. Never say never, but those aren’t the kind of movies I like to go see. They don’t make the kind of movies I like to see any more."
Even though he may not have ended up playing Green Lantern, theMad Menstar is still not giving up on joining the comic book film genre. In the same interview withThe Hollywood Reporter,Hamm made it clear that he is still talking to both Marvel and DC about potentially landing a gig.
Without going into too much detail, Hamm said,“There were a lot of conversations, and I’m still in those. I talk to the guys that run Marvel and DC. And I’m a comic book nerd. So, we’ll see. Even that part of the industry is changing.“Whichever side gets Hamm first remains to be seen, but it wouldn’t be shocking if he gets a role inthe MCU movie timelineas opposed to James Gunn’s upcoming DC Universe. As Hamm talked about looking to Goldblum’s career for inspiration, joining the MCU would seem more fitting for him.
The MCU could also be the time when another one of Hamm’s lost comic book roles comes to fruition, as he revealed toScreen Rantin November 2023 that he almost playedMarvel’s Mister Sinister in theX-Menfranchise. Since the MCU will be rebooting the X-Men for their own solo movie, this could be the opportunity for Hamm to finally play the iconic villain. Hopefully, there will be a time when Hamm finally gets to take on the comic book movie genre, whether it ends up being in theMCUorDC Universe.

The DC Universe is one of the biggest comic book franchises and often competes with Marvel. DC Comics started as National Allied Publications, founded by Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson in 1935. Since then, the franchise has exploded with thousands of comic books, movies, TV shows, and video games. 2013 marked the beginning of the most recent iteration of the superheroes, with Zack Snyder introducing Henry Cavill as Superman. After several movies with mixed reviews, DC underwent a soft reboot under the helm of James Gunn and Peter Safran.
Marvel Cinematic Universe
The Marvel Cinematic Universe is a multimedia superhero franchise that began in 2008 with Paramount’s Iron Man starring Robert Downey Jr. The franchise quickly grew in popularity, with Disney eventually buying out Marvel Entertainment in 2009. The MCU consists of dozens of movies and TV shows, most notably Avengers: Endgame, WandaVision, and Loki.
