Summary

Jeremy Rennerdiscusses what kind of roles he is willing to take on in his post-accident career. In January 2023, Renner was involved in a snow plow accident that nearly took his life. He spent months in recovery trying to recuperate from his injuries, which included trauma to the chest and orthopedic injuries. Slowly, the actor started doing interviews again, and Renner has now restarted his acting career.

As per theSmartlesspodcast (viaEntertainment Weekly), Renner explains what kind of roles he is willing to accept as he gets back into his career. According to the actor, he is not able to take on “challenging” roles right now. Though he did not specify what type of challenge that entailed, he said that he only has “so much fuel to put into this reality, this body,” suggesting that the roles can not be particularly physically nor mentally taxing. Check out the full quote from Renner below:

I just don’t have the energy for it. I don’t have the fuel. I have so much fuel to put into this reality, this body, all this stuff. I can’t just go play make-believe right now. It takes a lot of time to get right here every day, just so I can have a positive thought, so I can progress, so I can always keep growing.

What Is Next Up for Jeremy Renner?

Renner Has A Big Movie Role Coming

This is not the first time Renner has spoken about lacking the energy for roles. The actor’s first project following his 2023 accident was filming forMayor of Kingstownseason 3, wherein he plays the lead role of Mike McLusky. Though this role revived him in some ways, Renner revealed in a May interview withScreen Rantthat he “probably wasn’t quite physically ready” to return to his role in the Paramount+ show. He is proud of the “physical recovery” he has made, but did stress the challenge of the season.

Mayor of Kingstownis currently in its third season, with the next episode airing on Sunday, June 30.

Though Renner eschews harder roles for now, he is not fully slowing down from acting. The actor will see his first post-accidentmovie role inWake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery. His role in theKnives Outsequel has yet to be revealed, but the nature of the story makes it such that Renner could play a goofier, lighter character. This type of role fits within the parameters that Renner outlines above, making it a good fit as he continues his career.

While he may not be getting back to physically demanding roles like Hawkeye or dramatic feats like that ofThe Hurt Lockerany time soon, Renner’s statement makes it clear that he is still invested in his career. His commitment to taking roles within his comfort level will preserve the longevity of his career, even if it reduces the volume of projects in the short-term. As he continues hiswell-received run onMayor of Kingstown,Rennercan continue to show that he is still a tour de force actor in his post-recovery state.
