Summary

The world ofFallout 4can be a dangerous and strange place, with raiders, super mutants, and Deathclaws seemingly at every turn. So the last thing any Sole Survivor needs on the plate as they search for their son is to deal with a stalker as well. However, all is not as it seems — although someone definitely has their eye on them from the start — their intentions appear to be benevolent.

Set in Boston and the surrounding Commonwealth, the Sole Survivor must team up with variousfactions inFallout 4, both old and new to the franchise, to find their missing child. With plenty of characters and side quests to discover it’s easy to miss some hidden details of the world, however there is one covert character who appears far more than perhaps first realized. While many might miss them during a first playthrough, once they are spotted, it’s hard to unsee the lurking presence following the Sole Survivor.

Fallout 4: Should You Join The Railroad?

The Railroad is one of Fallout 4’s more sympathetic factions, but joining it has consequences. Here’s what players can expect from the Railroad.

The Potential Future Companion Appears In Several Locations

As the Sole Survivor wanders the Commonwealth and visits some of the more established settlements, they may spot a strange man lingering near them. Popping up at certain points or locations, this seemingly random NPC’s true identity can be revealed if the Railroad is joined, asit appears Deacon has been keeping an eye on the Sole Survivor. These encounters will only occur if Deacon has not already been met as part of“Road to Freedom,”but they go some way to explain why the Railroad’s top agent knows so such about events in the game.

Deacon Will Be Hiding In Three Of Fallout 4’s Settlements

The Clever Agent Uses Different Disguises Each Time

The first time many might run into Deacon will be duringthe Sole Survivor’s first trip to Diamond City. As the Great Green Jewel’s giant door opens, Mayor McDonough will greet the city’s new arrival, along with local journalist and futureFallout 4companionPiper. As Piper and the Mayor trade barbs, several Diamond City security guards will be seen milling around in the background.

After the conversation is over, if the ticket office is approached,a bald guard with sunglasses can be seen close to the coffee machine. Deacon will have unique dialogue as he attempts to keep his cover, and on-screen text will simply say Diamond City Security. This is the only time Deacon will appear in Diamond City in disguise before recruiting him as a companion, and it is one of the easiest to miss.

Deacon greets the player as they find the Railroad in Fallout 4

Likewise, Deacon will appear again the first time the Sole Survivor visits Bunker Hill, this time blending with the trade hub’s many caravans. Dressed as a caravan worker,Deacon will be leaning against a shack immediately to the left when enteringBunker Hill’s gates. As with Diamond City, this “Caravan Worker” has Deacon’s trademark sunglasses and will have a unique dialogue about“trading for trade stuff.”

Each disguised Deacon counts as a separate character inFallout 4’s game files, meaning it is possible for one to die and Deacon still shows up when meeting the Railroad.

A Fallout 4 settlement by a small lake.

The last large settlement Deacon can be found in is Goodneighbor, where he will opt for two disguises to keep an eye on his target. He can be spotted wearing a plaid shirt and jeans, acting as a drifter, wherehe will stand around near Daisy and KL-E-O’s stores. Deacon will even come and watch Hancock’s speech during the Sole Survivor’s initial visit to the settlement and join in as the crowd shouts and responds to Hancock’s words.

The second place to spot the elusive agent is inside Goodneighbor’s Memory Den, where Deacon will do a quick glance for the Sole Survivor, donning a new outfit. HereDeacon will be inside one of the memory loungerspretending to be a customer of the establishment. He cannot be interacted with here and will remain static in the pod when it is approached, presumably to focus on watching the Sole Survivor’s actions.

Interestingly, if the Sole Survivor gets close enough to the pod and tries to look at the screen inside, it will not show them any of Deacon’s memories. Instead, the screen will only show the standardFallout‘please stand by’ display. This is a great way of adding that extra bit of detail thatDeacon is only pretending to be a patron and going through the motions while he focuses on his job.

Deacon Was Watching The Player From The Very Beginning

One Easy To Miss Spot Hints At Deacon’s Intentions

The final spot evidence of Deacon’s stalking can be found back at Vault 111. From the Vault elevator, if the Sole Survivor heads slightly southwest up a hill, they will find a lookout post. The post is simple with just a chair, table, candles, and some water, but more interestingly,it has the Railroad symbol for ally marked on a plank of wood.

The Railroad symbols and their meaning can be found inside the Railroad HQ on a blackboard. There are six in total for ally, cache, danger, safehouse, and deadrop, as well as point, with an arrow to indicate the direction of something important.

Although there is no confirmation that the Railroad agent watching overVault 111is Deacon, seeing someone emerge from a Vault is definitely the kind of thing that would pique his interest.Deacon was most likely there after finding out that the Institute had visited the underground facility, and reading Desdemona’s terminal entries seems to confirm this. In them, she claims that Deacon is chasing ghosts and is convinced that the solution to their problems lies in the past.

The final big clue to Deacon being the Railroad agent watching the Vault is his personal project’s codename. Desdemona’s entries talk aboutDeacon working on a secret project he has named Wanderer. While this could be an Easter egg reference toFallout 3’s Lone Wanderer, it is also the Railroad call sign the Sole Survivor will be given if they don’t pick one for themselves.

It would seem thatDeacon had big plans for the Sole Survivor from the very beginningofFallout 4. He will even claim that everything went just as he planned if the Railroad is the faction chosen to complete the main questline with. Although everything Deacon says should be taken with a grain of salt, there is no denying this spy was very good at his job.
