Warning! SPOILERS about Mayor of Kingstown season 3, episode 3 ahead.
Summary
Alliances are made as fast as they are broken inMayor of Kingstown, but one relationship in particular falling apart risks causing great problems to the entire town. After the prison riots in season 1 prompted a war that caused countless innocent victims in the streets, the unlikely deal between gang leaders and the DA guaranteed a relatively peaceful future for Kingstown, even with most of the leaders still in prison. However, a tentative peace could be pursued only because Mike had access to information from all sides, which seems like a difficult feat inMayor of Kingstownseason 3.
The informal role of mayor was only ever as good as the access it gave to Kingstown’s power brokers. That was true for Mike’s clients and the gangs who asked him for favors, making it imperative for Mike to have access to the gang leaders as to the prison, or his role as a facilitator would be greatly diminished. While Mike’s in with the police and the Crips never suffered, the same cannot be said for other important power brokers Mike must reachbut is unable to after one of his relationships turned sour inMayor of Kingstownseason 3.

Kareem’s New Warden Position In Mayor Of Kingstown Season 3 Teased By Creator
EXCLUSIVE: Mayor of Kingstown creator Hugh Dillon teases the long-term impact of Kareem’s new position as an influential warden in season 3.
Mike Learned About Callahan & Gunner From Bunny In Mayor Of Kingstown Season 3
Not Knowing About Gunner & Callahan Disconnects Mike Even More From The Prisons
Mayor of Kingstownseason 3 showed Mike partially lose the ability to be one step ahead of all players in Kingstown. Not only did Mike learn about Konstantin’s arrival solely after the police found Tatiana’s body and her child in a dumpster, but he also impulsively went to Tatiana’s old club and Konstantin’s new base to confront him because of what he did to Tatiana. This put Mike on Konstantin’s radar, makingMayor of Kingstownseason 3’s new Russian mobsteraware of Mike as a possible nuisance, and it also didn’t let Mike gain any new insight on Konstantin Noskov.
If being on Konstantin’s radar without knowing a lot about him wasn’t bad enough, Mike didn’t even know about Callahan’s arrival at Anchor Bay, nor about Callahan killing Gunner and essentially becoming the new de-facto AB leader in Kingstown.Mike learning about both upheavals from Bunny showed how glaringly obvious it was that he lost the advantage that made him a good mayor, as knowing about changes in gang leadership and new criminals arriving in Kingstown was essential if Mike wanted to be ready to handle new attempts against peace in Kingstown.

Learning about Callahan being moved from Millhaven to Anchor Bay from Bunny showed just how disconnected Mike was from what happened in prison, highlighting a huge problem that was already hinted at inMayor of Kingstownseason 2.
Why Mike Needs Kareem’s Cooperation In Mayor Of Kingstown
Not Knowing What Happens In The Prisons Firsthand Makes Mike A Worse Mayor
While Carney did his best to inform Mike about what happened in Anchor Bay, being demoted by Kareem inMayor of Kingstownseason 3, episode 2 hindered his chances to learn about the deals and happenings in the prison. Still, even without the change in Carney’s mansions, only Kareem, as warden, would have known about Callahan moving to Anchor Bay.Kareem willingly chose not to inform Mike about Callahan’s move, knowing fully well how the prisoner’s transfer would have impacted the AB leadership’s hierarchy, and did so because he had long decided he was the only authority inside the prison.
Anna’s Story Proves Mike Forgot About His Original Mayor Of Kingstown Mission
Mike’s inability to help Anna or recognize her wish for revenge shows how disconnected he is from his regular clients in Mayor of Kingstown.
Indeed, by deciding not to recognize Mike as some kind of authority, Kareem rejected Mike’s informal position of mayor as one that should wield power, thus refusing to involve Mike in whatever happened in Anchor Bay, no matter how Mike’s involvement essentially made peace possible inMayor of Kingstownseason 2. This way,Kareem’s decision effectively decreases Mike’s power, taking out of the equation what essentially gave Mike an advantage: knowledge. Taking away Mike’s access to the prison keeps Mike out of the loop, making it impossible for him to do his job as mayor efficiently, thus risking Kingstown’s safety.

Refusing Mike’s involvement in the prison dealings because he viewed Mike as a criminal also made Kareem’s hypocrisy evident. After all, despite wanting to manage the prison by the book, Kareem pursued revenge and beat up the inmates who attacked him in the prison riots, and one of them dying inMayor of Kingstownseason 2 makes Kareem complicit.Refusing to be involved with Mike’s criminal dealingsthus not only makes Kingstown more unsafe but alsohinges on Kareem’s supposed moral high ground, which at the very least wavers considering Kareem’s actions following the riots.
Kingstown Risks To Suffer Because Kareem Continues To Shut Mike Out
Mayor Of Kingstown Season 2 Showed What Happens In The Prisons Influences The Outside
Mike’s role as mayor inMayor of Kingstownoften made Kareem feel powerless in the TV show. However,Mayor of Kingstownproved more than once that without Mike’s interference, balance among those with power in Kingstown couldn’t be achieved. By having an in with all the gangs in Kingstown and the police, Mike is one of the few who can put them in contact with each other, cutting deals and playing peacemaker, avoiding an all-out war.
This was especially noticeable inMayor of Kingstownseason 2 when in the aftermath of the prison riots, Mike made a deal between the gangs and the DA possible, effectively stopping the war in the streets and re-establishing order in Anchor Bay too.Stopping the gangs’ war wouldn’t have been possible without Mike’s friends in all places, making his role as mayor a necessary evil in Kingstown, one Kareem must make peace with again soon, or many could suffer as a consequence, both within and outside the prison’s walls inMayor of Kingstownseason 3.
